SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Counties is an IICRC firm. The Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) creates the standards for the restoration industry and provides training and certification to restoration companies. IICRC Certified Firms have the right to display the IICRC Certified Logo.

IICRC Certified Firms must

• Present accurate information to consumers and conduct business with honesty and integrity.

• Require a technician on all jobs who has been formally trained and passed all required tests.

• Require a continuing education program to keep technicians up-to-date on the latest changes in the industry.

• Maintain liability insurance to protect all parties in the event of an accident.

• Maintain a written complaint policy and agree to Better Business Bureau or similar arbitration to resolve disputes, and accept the conclusions and recommendations of arbitration.

The IICRC Develops The Standards For The Restoration Industry

The IICRC has been the driving force in establishing the main industry standards and reference guides for professional carpet cleaning, water damage restoration and mold remediation. These IICRC standards take years to develop and require the coordination of experts in the field: manufacturers, industry organizations, insurance professionals, training schools, contractors, and public health professionals.

Every five years, the standards are reviewed and updated. The water damage restoration field changes rapidly with advancements in technology and science, and therefore the standards must evolve to keep pace.

Mold and Water Damage in Home in Morehead City

Mold on Ceiling Mold on the ceiling!

When the hot water heater let go and flooded their house, these homeowners called SERVPRO immediately.  Our SERVPRO crew arrived in an hour and a half to find water standing everywhere.  After extracting the excess water, SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow determined that the water had permeated under the baseboards in the rooms adjacent to the hot water heater.  The homeowners could not imagine that the water had made it's way under the baseboards and had started to wick up the sheetrock behind the wainscoting..... until they saw it for themselves.  They were equally surprised to see that mold was growing on the back side of the baseboard.  That led us to believe that there had been a slow leak in the days leading up to the water heater erupting.  SERVPRO understands the science behind water damage mitigation, let us help make your home, "Like it never even happened."

National Preparedness Month

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Green post September is National Preparedness Month!

No matter where you live or work, emergencies caused by weather, fire, wind, water, and other natural or manmade disasters can strike at any time and are largely unpredictable. The property restoration professionals at SERVPRO, an industry-leading provider of fire and water cleanup and restoration services, reminds home and business owners that preparing in advance is the best thing you can do to help minimize a disaster’s impact on your loved ones and your property. Each year, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) designates September as National Preparedness Month – a time to create, or update, your plan for when disaster strikes.

“In the same way that people make ‘resolutions’ at the New Year, National Preparedness Month is a great time to resolve to create a plan, or review your existing plan, each and every year,” said Rick Isaacson, CEO of SERVPRO Industries, LLC. “Everyone needs a comprehensive emergency plan. Business owners also need to plan for business interruption and continuation. But equally importantly, families and businesses alike need immediate access to data like emergency and insurance contacts, shut-off valves, electrical panel locations, and the line of command to authorize work so emergency responders can react quickly and appropriately during the emergency. This month’s focus on preparedness is a great incentive for both families and businesses to put a plan in place and review it regularly.”

  • The street address of the water-damaged home
  • When did the flooding or water damage occur?
  • What caused the water damage (if known)?
  • Is there electricity available (on-site)?

Faster to Any Size Emergency

Soot Clean up

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Soot from fire Damage Soot on walls from fire damage

Smoke and soot is very invasive and can penetrate various cavities within your home, causing hidden damage and odor. Our smoke damage expertise and experience allows us to inspect and accurately assess the extent of the damage to develop a comprehensive plan of action.

Smoke and soot facts:

  • Hot smoke migrates to cooler areas and upper levels of a structure.
  • Smoke flows around plumbing systems, seeping through the holes used by pipes to go from floor to floor.
  • The type of smoke may greatly affect the restoration process.

Different Types of Smoke

There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Coutnies will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:

Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber

  • Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.

Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood

  • Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.

Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire

  • Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.

Our Fire Damage Restoration Services

Since each smoke and fire damage situation is a little different, each one requires a unique solution tailored for the specific conditions.  We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage.  We will also treat your family with empathy and respect and your property with care.

Fire Damage in Swansboro

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Soot webs on wall Soot webs on wall

Is your worst nightmare a phone charger or battery charger catching on fire? Well it was for this Swansboro family. The husband had a drill battery on charge in the kitchen, just like he had always done, just like we all have done before. The battery charger malfunctioned and caught fire in the kitchen the fire damage itself was minimal but the soot and smoke caused the most damage throughout the house. The family and the family pets were all safe and okay, that's the most important part! SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties were immediately called and were on the scene right away. We got in there and remediated the fire damage and ozoned the house to help eliminate smoke odor. SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow also did the repairs on this home. If you or someone you know experiences fire damage in their home or business give us a call at 910-326-1344

Prevent Soot From Gas Logs

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Soot on house Soot on house

The change of season is coming and that means getting our fireplaces in shape. For some of us that means cleaning the lint and dust off our gas logs that have collected over the past months. This is a great idea as they may become much more dirty than we would expect. Not only can airborne debris from our animals, an open door or window or natural dust in the air land on our logs and build up but when the logs are burning it creates a natural draft because of the demand for oxygen and creates a magnet for these debris. They slowly clog the fresh air intake port making the flame week and yellow instead of blue eventually leading to the pilot not staying lit.

Onslow County Fire Damage

Pan that caught fire Pan that caught on fire on the stove.

SERVPRO advises to never leave the room when you have something cooking on your stovetop.  We've all done it, a few of us have gotten lucky, others have had their kitchen or whole house go up in flames, some have gotten hurt or killed.  Remember, more injuries are reported from kitchen fires than any other type of home fire.

One of our customers in Onslow County was very lucky.  The lady of the house went to check on the children and came back to find her frying pan on fire.  She reacted promptly and used her ABC Rated fire extinguisher to douse the flames.  Besides the range hood being scorched, the damage was minimal.  Still smoke and soot had spread throughout her home permeating and coating everything.  SERVPRO was able to clean the walls. ceiling, floors, furniture and even the air ducts!  When it was all said and done, there was no scent of smoke and no signs of soot!   Another successful remediation and deodorization and the best part of all, another happy customer!!!

Fire Damage to small room Fire Damage to small room.

SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties responded to a call from Morehead City after a recent kitchen fire.  The whole home was affected by heat, soot and smoke but only the kitchen had significant fire damage.  Thankfully the homeowners were able to get out of the structure with no injuries.  One result of a heavy smoke fire is the presence of soot webs, they look like cobwebs but are black.  Most people assume they aren't very good housekeepers when they see the soot webs, they think that they are cobwebs that have been turned black by the smoke.  The truth is that soot webs form independently when the smoke starts condensing and they have absolutely nothing to do with cobwebs.  SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow also collected the homeowners contents to ensure that they are cleaned and disinfected properly. Call SERVPRO at 910-326-1344 if you experience fire damage in your home or bus

Staff Development

Servpro Group Photo SERVPRO Group Photo

Staff development is one of the toughest jobs we do as leaders. We hire managers and ensure they align with the company culture and values. We rely on them to develop the team within your company culture and values. Of course, we model the culture and live the values as the leader, and we know everything we do is being observed as validation of our alignment to those values. If we do so, the company culture is solid and everyone is aligned to what matters most.

Yes, you focus on Driving the Five: Customer Service, Revenue Growth, Profitability, Management and Staff Development. Your team understands why each critical outcome is so important to the company well-being and developing opportunities for the team moving forward. Staff development starts with every teammate understanding this information!

Yes, you focus on the five SERVPRO Core Values: Believe in a Dream, Grow Relationships, Share the SERVPRO Story, Financially Frugal, and Follow the System. Your team understands why each core value matters, especially in challenging times like these. Each of the values takes on real meaning when we see the harvest of whether or not we have been living these values in our company! No matter what the current situation, the best action is committing to execute on the core values even better than before!

We also rely on our managers to onboard new teammates and to continue their training and development. We rely on management to keep developing the skills and abilities of every teammate and to set specific objectives to improve the results of their work on the team. We make sure they use their SSO so we can track efforts at accessing training resources and continually learning. As the leader we keep learning and growing as well, and we take time to connect with the management team, the staff, and to mentor when appropriate. Our team knows we care about their growth, and it’s a priority we expect them to care about as well. It sounds easy to do, but we know it’s difficult to make happen in our organization.

Staff development is a critical outcome that drives the quality of the team and determines the success of the mission. As the leader, work with your managers to focus on staff development. One Team developing! -Rick Isaacson

Water Damage with a side of mold, please!

9/19/2023 (Permalink)

Moldy Drywall Moldy Drywall

Water damages occur much more often than people realize with the most typical cause being some kind of plumbing leak.  If the home is unoccupied at the time, the water may run for days or even weeks before it is discovered.  Since we live at the coast, there are many vacation homes that sit empty a good portion of the year.  In this case, SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties was called to a condo in North Topsail Beach where the water had been leaking for days.  It was bad, flooring was soaked, sheetrock falling down and visible mold growth everywhere.  Our equipment indicated moisture in the wall cavities so we had to start removing the wet sheetrock.   We discovered hidden mold behind almost every piece we took down.  Mold is the most prevalent secondary damage caused by water leaks.  It’s usually starts growing within 36-48 hours and it is present on 75% of the water damages we work.  SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties is certified in structural drying and mold remediation through the IICRC, call the restoration professionals at SERVPRO when you discover water damage in your home.

Fire Damage Safety Tips

5/1/2023 (Permalink)

Fire around home Fire Safety around your home or business.

One way to reduce the potential for fire
damage is to get rid of combustible materials within 30 feet of your home. This could be fireprone vegetation, firewood stacks, combustible patio furniture, umbrellas, etc. Here are a few examples of ways to remove fire hazards from around your home: Remove combustible litter on roofs and gutters, trim tree branches that overhang the roof and chimney, eliminate all combustible materials within 30 feet of the home, make sure all grills and fire pits have no flames left in them before going to bed that night or leaving your home, and make sure all battery items that require to be plugged in are unplugged when leaving your home or turning in for the night. There are many more ways to proyect your home and business, we suggest going on the FEMA website and seeing their list of fire safety tips.

Avoid a cleaning disaster by kowing the type of fibers.

Fibers Know your Fiber type

Avoid a cleaning disaster by knowing the type of fibers in the material you're cleaning. Knowing the fiber type and using the right cleaning product and method could be the difference between restoration and replacement.

Natural Fibers: Plant fibres include seed hairs, such as cotton; stem (or bast) fibres, such as flax and hemp;leaf fibres, such as sisal; and husk fibres, such as coconut. Animal fibres include wool, hair and secretions, such as silk.

Man-Made Fibers: fibres are produced are known as polymers, a class of compounds characterized by long, chainlike molecules of great size and molecular weight. Many of the polymers that constitute man-made fibres are the same as or similar to compounds that make up plastics, rubbers, adhesives, and surface coatings.

Synthetic Fibers: made of synthetic materials, usually formed through chemical processes. The fibers are generally extracted during the chemical process using a spinneret, which is a device that takes polymers to form fibers.

Mineral fiber: fibrous inorganic substances made primarily from rock, clay, slag, or glass. These fibers are classified into three general groups: fiberglass (glass wool and glass filament), mineral wool (rock wool and slag wool), and refractory ceramic fibers (RCF).

Fire Prevention Week 2022

Pan on fire in the kitchen Fire Prevention Week 2022

Fire Prevention Week 10/4 – 10/10 2022

We have a whole week dedicated to fire prevention. Why is that? Fire Prevention Week is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire. This fire caused devastating damage. More than 250 people killed, 100,000 people left homeless, more than 17,400 structures destroyed, and more than 2,000 acres of land burned. Did you also know that every 90 seconds a residential fire occurs somewhere in the United States?

Here in eastern North Carolina, the weather has started cooling down in the evenings and we have come into what most would call “bonfire season”. We want to share some backyard fire pit safety tips with you to ensure your fun evening doesn’t become an uncontrollable nightmare. Whether you prefer a built-in or portable fire pit, choose one that is not too large for the area. The pit should be a minimum of 10 feet away from any structures or combustible materials as well as away from trees, fences, sheds, power lines, telephone wires, and at least 25 feet away from apartment or multi-residence buildings.

  • Make sure that the seating area is large enough and properly placed for comfort and ventilation.
  • Check wind direction before lighting a fire.
  • Don’t use flammable fluids (gasoline, lighter fluid, etc.) to light or relight fires.
  • To start the fire, use a lighter to ignite crumpled pieces of paper covered with small sticks. Then, add larger sticks and a log or two to keep it burning.
  • Burn only dry material. Damp material will create excess smoke.
  • Use a commercial fire pit screen on top to help prevent large amber from leaving the controlled area.
  • Don’t wear flammable clothing (like nylon) or any loose-fitting clothing.
  • Never leave the fire unattended, and keep pets and children far away from the fire as they will be attracted to it.
  • Keep a fire extinguisher, garden hose, or bucket of water nearby.
  • As the fire dies down, use a shovel and spread out the ashes to allow them to cool down. Then slowly pour water over those ashes and watch them closely to be sure that no burning embers remain or reignite. Put the cooled ashes in a specially designated ash storage metal can.

Does Your Business Have A Mold Problem?

9/30/2021 (Permalink)

Brick commercial building Mold can spread through a building in as little as 48 hours.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is a fallacy. Consider the following mold facts:

  • Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.
  • Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.
  • Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce health effects.
  • Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold may return.
  • Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.
  • Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation.

Water Damage and Mold in North Topsail Beach, NC

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

Odors Got You Down?

9/8/2021 (Permalink)

Thermal fogger Typical thermal fogger used by SERVPRO Professionals.

The Funk

Odors, there everywhere right? Some good, some bad.  And then you have the day after taco dinner night. Now that’s worse. It seems every dwelling has a different odor. Some houses always smell like good cooking even when nobody is cooking and then some smell like cat urine. Some smell like potpourri and some smell like cigarette smoke.

Then you have the severe cases, although day after Mexican ranks high. How about a decomposing body found after a period of time? In my opinion there is no worse smell than death. How about a structure that has suffered mold or water damage? How about a sewer backup?   Smoke or soot damage? All of these have one thing in common, they are an odor.

How are odors detected?

No mechanical instrument is capable of detecting the presence of an odor or the intensity of an odor. Humans depend on the ‘ol sniffer as the best “instrument” for detecting odor. Odors result from airborne chemicals, gases, or tiny particles. As we breathe, these molecules are absorbed by the mucous membranes in our nose and mouth. Receptors, called olfactory nerve endings, send a message to the brain, where the odor sensation is interpreted.

Now think about this, how many times have you detected an odor but didn’t know where it was coming from. Or tried to sell or rent a house that was occupied by a pet person or smoker. They may not be there anymore but the odor is. Do you know why? It’s time to deodorize.

Stop the press!!

Time to throw a wrench. Did you know that some people THINK they smell an odor when there is really nothing there. Ever had somebody say, “Hey, come here and smell this. Do you smell that?” And no, I’m not talking about when your dad tricks you into coming into the bathroom as soon as he walks out. I’m talking about imaginary odor, also known as heightened awareness odors.

Imaginary or psychological odor is what people think they smell. They are stimulated by a given set of circumstances and strong impressions formed from similar circumstances before. Some people think they smell something because of the circumstances, not because of an odor actually being present.

Approach and Treatment

Deodorization would be simple if all odors came from one source and one deodorization method could eliminate all of them. Unfortunately, all odors do not come from one source. Do not panic though. We got you covered. Here is a brief description of the four basic procedures effective in most deodorizing situations.

1. Remove the odor source and debris. Remove the odor source, rather than attempting to deodorize the source. For example, if the source of odor is a dead animal you would not think of leaving the animal in place and trying to deodorize. In a building damaged by a fire, you should remove charred structural materials before deodorizing. Debris contaminated with smoke residues can continue to give off smoke odors or soils if not removed. Removing the odor source is the universal first step in deodorization.

2. Clean surfaces that have odor-causing residues. Small particles of odor-producing residue will continue to generate odors if not cleaned effectively. For example, in a grease fire you may need to clean significant concentrations of residue from the stove, countertops, vent hood, vent filter, cabinets, walls, and ceilings to stop odor problems. Check all rooms—not just the kitchen—to see how far odors have penetrated. Sometimes the entire structure and its contents may need to be cleaned to remove smoke odors.

3. Re-create the conditions that caused odor penetration. Distribute a deodorizer to a surface in a manner similar to the way odor-causing substances penetrated the surface. For example, if smoke created the problem, a deodorizing “smoke” or fog will be most effective in following odors to their source. If urine contaminated an area, then “flood” affected areas with deodorizers (sanitizers, neutralizers, and digesters). Odors can be distributed in more than one way. For example, decaying flesh produces fumes and gases, which are distributed on air currents to surfaces not in direct contact with the source. This situation may require multiple methods of deodorization. Directly saturate any areas that were physically contacted by the source. Fog other areas to seek out odor vapors that have penetrated surfaces.

4. Seal surfaces exposed to malodors. Sealing is not required in all circumstances, but may be called for in severe situations. If odor removal would be too expensive or impractical, sealing might eliminate the problem. Two common situations are sealing and painting ceilings and walls and sealing inaccessible duct surfaces in air handling systems.

Trust The Pros

You never have to go it alone and you shouldn’t have to. When odors are ruining your life and your dwelling call the pros. We have the equipment, solutions and people to fix all your deodorization needs. Remember, at SERVPRO, we make it, "Like it never even happened."

Morehead City NC home suffers fire damage, no one is hurt.

Fire damage in kitchen Fire damage in kitchen

Call SERVPRO at 910-326-1344 if you experience fire damage in your home or business!

Carteret County Fire Damage

Burnt pan Here is the culprit for this kitchen fire.

One of our customers in Carteret County was very lucky.

Prevent Soot From Gas Logs

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

soot on brick Soot on hearth caused by incomplete combustion.. In this case misplaced logs.

Knowing this, it is imperative to keep our units clean. A simple vacuuming will help alleviate this. The thing to remember is that with all gas log fireplaces the logs are designed to only go in one way. If you pull the logs out to clean you must replace in the same pattern. There is no one way in stacking these gas fireplace logs over a fireplace burner. The placement of the logs depends on the manufacturer who makes the burner and the model. As a general rule, you must follow the instructions provided in the manufacturer's manual. Usually, the manual provides a numbered illustration on how to stack the gas logs. There are some models that have holes on the logs, which matches on specific pins located on the burner.

When these logs are set properly the flames will just dance around the gas logs, yet never touch the logs themselves. Soot happens when there is an incomplete combustion of the gas. If the log set placement is improper, the flame could touch the logs, cooling the flame in the process, which results in an incomplete combustion of the fuel. Soot is light and becomes airborne easily being disbursed through the dwelling landing on even the farthest corners. This potentially leads to major claims as the cleaning can become quite expensive. There is no thorough cleaning of soot, it is simply prepping for paint and that ends up being thousands of dollars in claims.

If you suspect soot or have any questions please don’t hesitate to call. 910-250-0222. Our professionals can assist you in any of your sooting needs and get you back to “Like it never even happened."

Sewage back-up in Emerald Isle

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Flooded basement Septic tank back-up after recent storm.

SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties was called to a local home when the tenants discovered the septic tank had backed up into the empty apartment below.  The entire space was affected including the walls, floors and all the personal belongings being stored there.  This photo was taken after we had removed the contents as well as the wood paneling, insulation, and VCT flooring.  Cleaning up behind sewage damage is expensive and there is usually significant reconstruction after the mitigation is complete.  That's why SERVPRO recommends that you review your homeowners policy from time to time,  it's important to know that you have adequate coverage for this type of loss.  Unfortunately, the owner of this home did not and had to take a loss on all of their personal belongings.

Mold and Water Damage in Newport NC

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Carteret & East Onslow Counties Smoke and Soot Cleanup

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Soot webs Often times people assume they have spider webs that see all of sudden because the soot from a fire. No spiders here, these are soot webs.

This family’s Swansboro home suffered from a fire caused by an accident while cooking dinner. It’s always devastating when a family experiences a house fire, but SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow worked hard to recover the structure and contents. We were able to remove the soot and even the smell of the smoke from the home, so that the family returned to a safe, clean space. Our goal is always to make your home “Like it never even happened.”

What To Expect:

When we visit your home after a fire loss, we will scope the affected areas to determine the extent of the loss. We will always pretest affected surfaces to determine the type of smoke and which products will help us recover the area most effectively. We have the equipment, expertise, and experience to restore your fire and smoke damage. If a fire has damaged your home, call us right away at 910-326-1344. SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Counties will treat you and your family with empathy and respect, and your property with care.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting.

Containment

6/4/2021 (Permalink)

Plastic hung in room Plastic Containment

SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties does a tremendous mold remediation business, this was a recent job in Morehead City.  We had an office building that had some mold issues as a result of a leaking roof. As is always the case, mold cannot be eliminated without first removing the source of moisture. We informed our customer that the roof needed to be repaired or replaced before the remediation would be successful.  They had a new roof put on and the leaks went away.  After a thorough assessment, SERVPRO determined only the back 1/3 of the building was affected.  It was necessary to seal off that portion of the building to keep the mold spores from contaminating the whole structure. With containment barriers and a negative air machine in place, we removed and discarded damaged and moldy building materials, and then we cleaned everything else.  The employees of this business could tell a big difference immediately once again, they feel safe at work.

Clean Your Gutters!

Clogged Gutter Leaves and debris clog gutters- set aside time to do an annual cleaning!

Fall is here and leaves are falling. Have you cleaned your gutters? Cleaning your gutters help avoid water damage to your home, possibly foundation problems. Properly functioning gutters will carry water through a downspout and away from your home. But a clogged gutter does the opposite—allowing water to spill over the sides and pour down your walls. Pooling water around your foundation can cause erosion weakening the walls, leading to foundation cracks and settling. Clogged gutters can also cause water leaks on the inside of your home. Trapped water can rot the wooden boards your gutters are mounted to, allowing moisture enter your home. Avoid costly repairs by taking the time to do a gutter clean at your home once or twice a year.

Movie nights snuggled up with Fido, dinner in the living room instead of the kitchen table, or a spot to take a quick nap. Or worst case scenario, your home has mold or water damage. The sofas in our homes are used in many different ways. A few bad stains and spills can ruin the overall appearance of a classic leather sofa--especially if left untreated or cleaned improperly. SERVPRO has three leather cleaning products that we offer for retail: Leather Cleaner, Leather Spotting Agent, and Suede & NuBuck Leather Cleaner.

SERVPRO's Leather Cleaner is a water based cleaner that can be used on all leather types. It is a mild cleaner that will not affect the leather's original properties or finish. It will clean most soiling as well as water-based stains. Leather Cleaner is solvent-free and works without removing finish or harming the leathers.

SERVPRO's Spotting Agent is a solvent based spot remover for Aniline and NuBuck leathers. It was developed to remove blue jean transfer, newspaper print, and deep stains like mustard and ink from Aniline and NuBuck leathers. This product works when nothing else will clean the leather. Bonfire Safety Bonfire Season in Eastern North Carolina

Fire Prevention Week 10/4 – 10/10 2020

Soot damage on a counter-top Smoke and Soot Damage Can Cause a Pervasive Odor in Your Hubert Home.

Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Counties will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred.

Does Your Commercial Business Have A Mold Problem?

9/10/2020 (Permalink)

Brick commercial building In Jacksonville, mold can spread through a building in as little as 48 hours.

Water Damage Caused by Busted Pipe

9/2/2020 (Permalink)

Water damage on hardwood flooring Water damage to hardwood flooring.

A busted pipe caused this Jacksonville home to have a water damage situation. Busted pipes can happen at any time, although they mostly occur during winter months, pipes can bust or crack for several reasons, corrosion, high water pressure, or even clogs in the pipe. SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties were on the scene immediately to extract water, fortunately this home was built on a concrete slab making it easier to extract and to possibly save the engineered hardwood flooring for use for the put back. Here are some tips for preventing busted pipes:

1. If it is extremely cold outside, always keep one or two faucets running slowly. Water moving through the system should prevent the line from freezing.

2. If purchasing a new home check pipes for leaks ahead of time.

3. Make sure tray and pipes are clean and clear on HVAC unit.

Large Water Damage in Jacksonville NC

10/17/2019 (Permalink)

A water damage that affects one or two rooms is bad enough but usually the occupants can continue to live in the structure during the drying and repair processes.  When the whole building is affected, plans have to be made to relocate the residents then move all the furniture and contents to a place where it can be dried, cleaned and stored.  SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties was contacted by a couple in Jacksonville NC when they got back in town after a long trip and discovered their home was flooded.  A water line in the ceiling of the second floor bathroom had failed and the water had probably been running for at least a week.  SERVPRO began by blocking furniture and moving contents out of harms way while we extracted the standing water.  After consulting with the homeowners as to what essential items they would need in the interim, we inventoried and packed up their belongings and brought them back to our warehouse and cleaning facility.  The couple was able to secure a hotel room nearby.  A restoration dry cleaner was brought in to take care of clothing, drapes and linens with priority service given to the clothing.  Now that we knew that the immediate needs of our customer where being taken care of, SERVPRO was able to begin the demolition and drying process.  It took three months to get all the repairs completed and move the furniture and family back in...which by all accounts was very fast considering the extent of the damage.  Water damage jobs vary greatly in severity and expense but just know that SERVPRO will make it, "Like it never even happened."

Fire Prevention Week

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Fire Prevention Week 2019 is dated for October 6-12. This years campaign slogan is "Not all heroes wear capes" which falls in line with SERVPROs "Hero ready" standards. What defines hero? A hero can be many different things to many different people. A hero can be a courageous and selfless person who comes to your rescue when a fire destroys your home, or it can be the men and woman in green who come to your rescue when your house gets flooded or when another disaster strikes. Not all heroes wear capes so make sure to have a plan and place to go whenever a disaster strikes. Be sure to call SERVPRO, we will make sure to make it Like it never even happen happened."

Duct/HVAC cleaning

10/10/2019 (Permalink)

Are you seeing dust right after a full house deep cleaning? DO you see or feel dust in the air? Are you or your family dealing with severe allergy flare ups? if so it may be time for a duct/HVAC cleaning. Ventilation systems are often the biggest culprit in poor indoor air quality. Make it a priority to inspect the ductwork of your home or business. SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties Professionals routinely inspect the heating, ventilation and air conditioning unit (HVAC). Keeping them clean can extend the life of the equipment. We offer duct cleaning services to residential and commercial properties. Another good time to do a duct cleaning would be right after construction in your home or office building, all the dust and construction debris can get sucked into the ventilation system and cause your HVAC system to have problems in the future.

Conditions In Carteret County Might Be Right For Mold

5/28/2019 (Permalink)

It’s estimated that more than 1 million types of mold exist, yet less than 10 percent have actually been named. This means mold is very common in both indoor and outdoor environments. While mold and humans can sometimes co-exist without issue, there are certain species of mold that can cause health effects for some people.

If the right conditions exist, mold will grow.  Those conditions include:

  • Water - Different mold types require varying amounts of liquid before growth begins.
  • Temperature - Normal indoor temperatures will promote mold growth.
  • Time - Initial mold colonizers can take hold within one day after being exposed to an adequate water supply.

Mold growth can occur in any home, so it’s important to keep an eye out for situations that might promote mold activity. Roof/chimney leaks, wet basements, or condensation from ducts that dampen surrounding insulation are just a few examples of issues that make a house a prime target for mold growth.

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Counties to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

If you suspect mold, call us today at 910-326-1344

What to Do:

  • Stay out of affected areas.
  • Turn off the HVAC system and fans.
  • Contact SERVPRO of Carteret & East Onslow Counties for mold remediation services.

Conditions In Carteret and East Onslow Counties Might Be Right For Mold

3/5/2019 (Permalink)

If you suspect mold in your home, call SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties to assess the situation. We have the knowledge, tools and track record to effectively remediate mold in your home or business.

Carteret & East Onslow Counties Smoke and Soot Cleanup

8/17/2016 (Permalink)

Often times people assume they have spider webs that see all of sudden because the soot from a fire. No spiders here, these are soot webs.

Does Your Carteret or Onslow County Home Have A Mold Problem?

8/17/2016 (Permalink)

In Carteret and Onslow County mold can spread through a home in as little as 48 hours.

These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Odors Got You Down?

9/16/2015 (Permalink)

Typical thermal fogger used by SERVPRO Professionals.

Remember, at SERVPRO, we make it, "Like it never happened".

Mold Causes and Conditions

8/21/2015 (Permalink)

Mold growing on vent and ceiling caused by mold in HVAC system being disbursed throughout house.

Causes and Conditions

Mold is everywhere, and can grow on almost any surface when moisture is present. They reproduce because of mold spores, which are carried by air currents, in many ways like a flower pollenating.  When spores land on a moist surface suitable for life, they begin to grow. Mold is commonly found indoors at levels which do not affect most healthy individuals.

Because normal building materials are capable of supporting mold growth and mold spores are everywhere, mold growth in an indoor environment is usually related to water or moisture and may be caused by incomplete drying of flooring materials (such as concrete). Flooding, broken water lines, appliance malfunctions, leaky roofs, building-maintenance or indoor-plumbing problems can lead to interior mold growth. Moisture commonly condenses on surfaces cooler than the moisture-laden air, enabling mold to thrive. This moisture vapor passes through walls and ceilings. Floors over crawl spaces and basements, without vapor barriers or with dirt floors, are mold-prone.

Significant mold growth needs moisture and food sources and a surface capable of supporting growth. Common building materials, such as plywood, drywall, carpets, and carpet padding provide the food mold needs. In the carpet, invisible dust and cellulose are food sources. After water damage to a building has occurred, mold grows in walls and then becomes dormant until subsequent high humidity; suitable conditions reactivate mold.

Most molds are commonly detectable by smell and evidence of water damage on walls or ceilings, and can grow in places invisible to the naked eye. It can sometimes be found behind wallpaper or paneling, on the backside of ceiling tiles, the back of drywall, or underneath carpets or carpet padding. Piping in walls can also be a source of mold, since they may leak and condensate.

As stated above, mold spores need three things to grow:

·         Nutrients: Cellulose and dust are a common food for indoor spores.

·         Moisture:  Needed to begin the decaying process caused by mold

·         Time: Mold growth begins anywhere from 24 hours to 10 days after the provision of growing conditions.

When mold colonies grow inside buildings the main health concern is the inhalation of mycotoxins. After a flood or water leak, mycotoxin levels are much higher even after a building has dried out.

Common food sources for mold in buildings can be cellulose-based materials such as wood, cardboard and the paper facing on drywall and organic matter such as soap, fabrics and dust-containing skin cells. If a house has mold, the moisture may originate in the basement or crawl space, a leaking roof or a leak in plumbing pipes. Insufficient ventilation may accelerate moisture buildup. Visible mold colonies may form where ventilation is poorest and on perimeter walls (because they are nearest the dew point).

HVAC systems can most definitely produce all three requirements for mold growth. The air conditioning system creates a difference in temperature, encouraging condensation which is why a condensation line is needed on the air handler. The high rate of dusty air movement through an HVAC system may supply plenty food for mold. Since the air-conditioning system is not always running, warm conditions are the final component for mold growth. The situation only becomes worse now because spores become airborne and are distributed throughout the house through the vents.

Removing one of the three requirements for mold reduces (or eliminates) new mold growth. Eliminate moisture, food and warmth and this will stop the growth but now you have to remediate what you have and that’s a whole other post.

Categories and Classes of Water Damage

8/18/2015 (Permalink)

Washing machine found to be overflowing with water while not in use causing basement to flood with 2 inches of water.

Water damage can originate from different sources such a leaking roof, washing machine overflow, dishwasher leakage, broken pipes, clogged toilet, broken dishwasher water line, moisture behind walls, foundation cracks, plumbing leaks, slab leaks and bad weather such as heavy rain and flooding.  When it comes to insurance coverage, most damage caused by bad weather is considered flood damage and normally is not covered under homeowners insurance. Coverage for bad weather would usually require flood insurance.

According to the  Insurance Institute for Business and Home Safety, the three most common causes of water damage are toilet clogging or overflowing, general plumbing problems such as aged water lines or fixtures and washing machine failures.

Categories of Water Damage

Category 1 Water - Refers to a source of water that does not pose substantial threat to humans and classified as "Clean Water". Examples are broken water supply lines, tub or sink overflows or appliance malfunctions that involves water supply lines.

Category 2 Water - Refers to a source of water that contains a significant degree of chemical, biological or physical contaminants and causes discomfort or sickness when consumed or even exposed to, known as "grey water". This type carries microorganisms and nutrients of microorganisms. Examples are toilet bowls with urine (no feces), sump pump failures and water discharge from dishwashers or washing machines.

Category 3 Water - Known as "black water" and is grossly unsanitary. This water contains unsanitary agents, harmful bacteria and fungi, causing severe discomfort or sickness. Type 3 category is contaminated water sources that affect the indoor environment. This category includes water sources from sewage, seawater, rising water from rivers or streams, ground surface water or standing water. Category 2 Water or Grey Water that is not promptly removed from the structure and or have remained stagnant may be re classified as Category 3 Water. Toilet back flows that originates from beyond the toilet trap is considered black water contamination regardless of visible content or color.

Classes of Water Damage

Class 1 - Slow Rate of Evaporation. Affects only a portion of a room. Materials have a low permeance/porosity. Minimum moisture is absorbed by the materials.

Class 2 - Fast Rate of Evaporation. Water affects the entire room of carpet and cushion. May have wicked up the walls, but not more than 24 inches.

Class 3 - Fastest Rate of Evaporation. Water generally comes from overhead, affecting the entire area; walls, ceilings, insulation, carpet, cushion, etc.

Class 4 - Specialty Drying Situations. Involves materials with a very low permeance/porosity, such as hardwood floors, concrete, crawlspaces, plaster, etc. Drying generally requires very low specific humidity to accomplish drying.

Prevent Sooting From Gas Logs

8/10/2015 (Permalink)

soot on brick Sooting on hearth caused by incomplete combustion.. In this case misplaced logs.

Sooting happens when there is an incomplete combustion of the gas.

Crawlspace Water Damage in Newport NC

11/4/2014 (Permalink)

This was the source of the water damage.

Our customer was out of town Saturday night when they got a call from their neighbor that water was running out into the yard from under their Newport NC home.  The neighbor located the supply box in the yard and got the water cut off.  Once our customer arrived home, they went under the house and discovered that most of the water had already soaked in. SERVPRO was called and determnined the supply line had ruptured about 8 inches from where it came out of the ground.  It had been spraying up against the air ducts, insulation and subfloor.  The ductwork was full of water and sagging between it's supports, some insulation had fallen down and the subfloor was wet but not as wet as you might have thought.  Instead of removing the ductwork, we slit it at the lowest point in each sag to drain the water.  Although it eventually had to be replaced, we needed to leave it intact for the time being because the temperature was dipping below freezing and the customer needed the heat from their furnace.  The wet insulation was bagged and removed. The crawlspace was so tight we could barely get air movers underneath and that made it necessary to "pipe in" dehumidification through  the crawlspace opening.  The structure dried fairly quickly, the ductwork was replaced and new insulation installed.  Another customer was happy they had called SERVPRO!

Commercial Mold Remediation in Jacksonville NC Mall

11/3/2014 (Permalink)

Moisture collected on the metal registers and the mold grew on the surface of the sheetrock.

SERVPRO was called to a clothing store at the mall after employees reported seeing mold in various locations.  Upon arriving, we inspected the areas of concern and found quite a few more.  Since most of the mold was located adjacent to HVAC registers, our first thought was that the building had an air conditioning problem.  SERVPRO technicians checked the relative humidity and it was very high, another indication of some sort of HVAC issues.  A local company was brought in to check the system and it was determined that the main air conditioning unit was "short cycling" and not removing sufficient humidity from the air.  It is important to note that when a structure has a mold problem, it also has a moisture problem. Mold cannot grow without moisture AND the source of the moisture must be identified and addressed before the mold can be properly remnediated.  In this case, the HVAC unit was repaired and that corrected the moisture problem.  SERVPRO arranged to come in on the weekend after the mall was closed and work through the night.  The problem was solved, the company was happy with our work but.......................not as happy as their employees!

Water Damage Near Hammocks Beach State Park

10/30/2014 (Permalink)

Notice the rust stains around the hot water supply faucet, this hose had a small leak before it ruptured.

Washing machine hoses are under full pressure at all times, whether you are at home or away.  When they rupture, up to 2 1/2 gallons of water can spew out every minute!  In other words, approximately 150 gallons of water flows out per hour.  SERVPRO was called to a residence recently where the family had been out of town for the weekend and came back to a home flooded by a busted hot water supply line.  Nobody really knows when the hose failed but it appears that the water had been running just about the whole time.  If we estimate just 48 hours, that would amount to over 7000 gallons!!!  It was bad, real bad but SERVPRO was able to get the structure dry in less than a week.  Between the dryout and the repairs, the whole bill was over $25,000.00.  In contrast, a new set of washing machine hoses would have cost between $15.00 and $75.00, quite a difference.  If you have standard rubber reinforced hoses and they haven't been replaced in 5 years, please consider replacing them now.  Also look for tell-tell signs of leakage as shown in the picture below.  Replacing old or compromised hoses will give you peace of mind and may save you big money!

SERVPRO went on a mold inspection for a property management company in Morehead City NC in August.  It was over 90 degrees that day and the outside air was very sticky.  Upon entering the apartment, the humidity hit us in the face, it was quite a surprise.  The temperature inside was 75 degrees and when we checked the relative humidity, it was 79%.  Just for comparison, inside humidity readings normally range from 50-55% in this area.  The mold growth was extensive in and around the HVAC registers with lighter mold present here and there.  It was obvious that the air conditioning was "short cycling" which means that it would come on just long enough to cool the air but not stay on long enough to remove the excess humidity.  This same phenomenon occurs when a central HVAC unit is too large for a property.  In this case the outside unit was defective and had to be replaced.  SERVPRO came in right after that and remediated the mold, now we have another happy customer!

Mold in Morehead City NC Office Building.

8/12/2014 (Permalink)

Here is the zippered containment barrier SERVPRO installed in this office building.

Havelock NC Fire Caused by Fireplace Puffback

8/12/2014 (Permalink)

This fireplace insert was the source of the puffback.

Puffbacks are usually caused by the delayed ignition of a buildup of combustible gases; it's really like a small explosion.  The resulting smoke and soot are blown out of every possible opening and can soil a single room or even a whole house.  Several rooms in this home in Havelock had to be cleaned as a result of the puffback.  In this case, every nail head on the sheetrock became visible, we call these nail pops.  Smoke has a magnetic quality and is attracted to the metal nails holding the sheetrock in place, it shows up as a series of dots along the joints.  SERVPRO cleaned the walls, ceilings and some of the customer's furniture.  All the walls and ceilings in those rooms had to be primed and painted.  Because we had done such a thorough job cleaning, there was no reason to deodorize.  With that in mind, GAS LOGS can cause the same issue over an extended period of time if they have not been serviced regularly or if they are misaligned.  If you use your gas logs a lot during the winter and haven't had then serviced in a couple of years, go ahead and have it done before heating season.

Whole house flooded in Vanceboro NC

Our SERVPRO technician checks the carpet for delamination, the backing was already coming loose.

Every now and then SERVPRO gets to a water damage job where the whole house has been affected.  In the case of this couple in Vanceboro, a supply line to the bathroom vanity had popped loose while nobody was home.  The bath was in the middle of the ranch style home which allowed the water to permeate the entire structure.  At SERVPRO, our objective is to SAVE rather than REPLACE wet building materials.  On the other hand, if there is any question as to whether or not the materials have been compromised, we must recommend replacement.  With damage as widespread as it was on this job, we had to remove and replace all of the floor coverings, most of the baseboards and the bottom 2 feet of sheetrock in every room.  It wasn't pretty and the couple were out of the home for a while but the job was done right and SERVPRO has another satisfied customer!

Water Damage and Mold near Beaufort NC

The moisture from the slow leak had been migrating under the vinyl floor towards the shower, check out all the MOLD!!!

When the SERVPRO crew arrived, there was standing water in the bathroom, bedroom and kitchen.  A supply line to the bathroom sink had busted loose and quickly flooded the area before the homeowner could get to the water cut-off.

SERVPRO extracted the standing water and then began to pull the vinyl flooring up in order to dry the subfloor.  Upon removing the vinyl, it was obvious from the amount of mold and rot in the subfloor that the supply line had been leaking for quite some time.

That’s usually bad news for the homeowner because slow leaks are considered a maintenance issue and are not typically covered as an insurance claim.  The Insurance company will cover the sudden rupture that caused the “flood” but will not be responsible for covering the long term rot.

The moral of the story is to do routine inspections of your plumbing and crawlspace so you'll catch the slow leaks and maintenance issues.

Carteret County Fire Damage

Here is the culprit for this kitchen fire.

One of our customers in Carteret County was very lucky.

Onslow County Water Damage

Rude Awakening!!!

Major water damages usually occur when nobody is home for an extended time period.  That was the case in an Onslow County home when the supply line to the upstairs vanity broke completely loose.  Two days later when the couple arrived home, it was a disaster!!!  With sheetrock down and floors and furniture wet, SERVPRO came in and started to salvage what could be saved.  We packed up all of their belongings and hauled them back to our storage facility to dry and clean.  Affected sheetrock, trim and floor coverings were removed and dehumidifiers and air movers were brought in to dry the structure.  Luckily, very little mold was discovered and the majority of that was on wet building materials that had to be removed anyway.  Since SERVPRO was contracted to do the repairs also, it made for a turnkey job.  Repairs were made, belongings returned, "Like it never even happened."

Cape Carteret NC Water Damage

Notice where SERVPRO has removed the carpet pad before setting the air mover in this corner.

Washing machine supply hoses are under constant pressure.  If they develop a leak, water continues to spray until someone becomes aware of it and turns off the cutoff valve.  That is why SERVPRO recommends you inspect and/or replace your washer supply lines on a regular basis.  Our customer in Cape Carteret wishes they had done just that, their washer hose erupted and flooded half of the house while they were out running errands.  SERVPRO was able to get the situation under control and start the drying process but at that point the damage was already done.  A good stainless steel set of washer hoses runs less than $75.00.  Compared to your homeowners insurance deductible, that's a great bargain.  Our Cape Carteret customer had to pay $1500.00 out of pocket, unfortunately the timing was terrible as they were beseiged by medical bills already.  Pay ahead, replace your washing machine hoses today!

Water Damage Caused By A Raccoon In Salter Path NC

6/30/2014 (Permalink)

Photo shows our technician using a penetrating moisture meter to check the moisture level in the shoe molding. It indicates complete saturation!

The majority of water damages are caused by plumbing failures or acts of Mother Nature; however, there are certainly exceptions.

A local church in Salter Path NC called us out when a raccoon played havoc with their roof while gaining access to the attic.  It all came to light after a couple of heavy days of rain.  Thankfully for us, the raccoon had been removed before we arrived!

SERVPRO could see wet ceilings, walls and floors in the section of the church building near where the roof was compromised.   As always, we used moisture meters to determine how far the water had spread and to what degree the different building materials were wet.

We took photos and documented all of the other information so we could plan a course of action.  Then the water was extracted, wet materials removed and dehumidifiers and air movers set in place.  The best part is that everything was dry and our equipment was removed in time for Sunday service!

Another water damage in Richlands, NC.

6/26/2014 (Permalink)

Water dripping from the ductwork where it had collected after flowing into the second story floor vents.

It all started with a hot water heater letting go while no one was home and flooding the house.  Unfortunately, that is something that SERVPRO encounters on a regular basis.  Hot water can be more damaging than cold water particularly when it comes to carpet.  The heated water starts to break down the adhesives that hold the carpet and backing together much faster.  That means the quicker SERVPRO is called to the water damage, the more opportunity we have to not only save the carpet but everything else.  The longer the water sits, the more damage it does and the more it permeates the structure.  In this case, the water damage was not discovered until our customer got home from work, they did the right thing and called us immediately.

Water Damage in Morehead City NC

Here's where the water damage started!

Everybody knows if there’s a water leak upstairs…that water will find its way downstairs.  SERVPRO was called to water damage late one afternoon that apparently started in the second floor bathroom that morning. The homeowners were at work so they didn’t discover the problem until they got home.  The first floor ceilings had fallen to the floor, the carpeting was soaked and water running out the front door, the water damage was about as bad as we see here at SERVPRO. Luckily there was part of the home that was not affected. We immediately started relocating furniture and other items to the portion of the house that was dry. Our technicians removed the remaining sheetrock that evening, cleaned up, treated to prevent mold and set air movers and dehumidifiers to start the drying process. By calling SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onlsow Counties quickly, the homeowners were able to minimize additional damage and save most of their furniture and other valuables!

Water Damage and Mold in North Topsail Beach, NC

Mold on the back of the sheetrock we removed in North Topsail Beach NC.

Morehead City NC home suffers fire damage, no one is hurt.

Soot webs!

Saturated ceiling from upstairs water leak.

Recently, we were called to a water damage at a rental property in Jacksonville NC.  The house had set empty for quite awhile between renters.  When the new tenant had the water service turned on, water started shooting out of the supply line in the upstairs bathroom.  Luckily the young lady discovered the leak  quickly and was able to get the water turned off to the home.  SERVPRO of Carteret and East Onslow Counties arrived and started the drying process within two hours.  The water damage was mitigated, sheetrock replaced and the ceiling and walls painted in plenty of time for the tenant to move in a day earlier than she had planned.  If your home suffers a water damage, call SERVPRO fast!

Mold and Water Damage in Newport NC

Mold in Newport home after water damage.

When the hot water heater let go and flooded their house, these homeowners called SERVPRO immediately.  Our crews arrived in an hour and a half to find water standing everywhere.  After extracting the excess water, SERVPRO determined that the water had permeated under the baseboards in the rooms adjacent to the hot water heater.

Sewage back-up in Emerald Isle

Septic tank back-up after recent storm.
